I feel like this story really could have used like, another two or three chapters of Mrs. Doubtfire shenanigans ala like the classic Mary Poppins stuff. Instead this story is exremely bare bones, with only the absolutely necessary plot elements included in its run.

Unfortunately, that plot is kinda painful. Without some comedic episodes to soften up the story and its characters, I'm left with just the highlights about how much our main character Daniel sucks, how his wife also sucks but absolutely less, and how his children are suffering from all of Daniel and his wife's terrible decisions.

The whole hook for the book is that Daniel is dressed up as a women and is serving as the Nanny for his own children. This is, charitably, the set-up for a joke. But for most of the book this is just the joke: the idea that Daniel is dressed up as a woman, and reminding you of that fact alone, is meant to carry you through the entire 200-ish pages. It's already a shitty and bigoted joke, but its also lazy!

Another of my childhood favourites. One of the first books which made me laugh out loud, and you will too.

makes me want to rewatch the movie! i actually did quite enjoy this!

What a boring book, next to that it was depressing. I thought it would have been more funny and like the movie, it was not. Also the book is written all weird.

The characters are not well-rounded.

Holyyyy shit. This is... a very speechless 'that's really fucked up' level of book
• Robin Williams was a perfect cast for the role to bring to life- and actually be likeable, funny, and warm
• This family is extremely fucked up and dysfunctional
• Everyone should’ve had mandated therapy
• Williams was a perfect cast to not make Daniel an absolute psycho
• Holy shit don’t kill or joke about killing your children’s pets
• Your youngest starts disassociating with reality
• O my fuck don’t throw your child against a wall and call them a bastard (because they asked you to step up and be a parent)
• The amount of imagined murdering your ex in creative ways
• Amount of focus on nude modeling (and why do your kids want to see you posing naked?)
• Don’t make your kids feel guilty for you needing to do things parents should do (I changed your diapers, I did this, I did blah. No you’re supposed to)

(the mom isn't a sterling parent either but oof)

All in all... this is a perfect book to have people understand that divorce is sometimes for the best. Sometimes people should really not be together, and can be better parents when that's what their focus is- on being a parent, not a spouse or showing up one another for who is being the better parent. Notice I say a recommend for 'people' not 'children' because I think it would actually traumatize children the amount of messed up that is made to be so normal.
