This is a hard book to read. Children being taken from their homes, treated horribly, and trying desperately to survive. The resilience of the human spirit is a true marvel.
Honestly such a good read. it was devastating and i gained a lot of empathy and learned so much.
Yes the ending was abrupt and some parts of the writing felt weird and amateur but overall it was good.

An excellent acount of Ishmael Beah's experiences as a child soldier in Sierra Leone. When he is 12 the war comes to his small village and he, his brother and several friends escape and wander the bush trying to stay alive. At 13, he is conscripted into the national army and used as a child soldier to kill or be killed. This is an extraordinary account of the horrifying experiences that happen across the world - and so far removed from our cushy lives in the "first world".
This is a tough read. Not because of the writing, but the content. It is nearly inconceivable for a child to have had such experiences, heartbreaking to see this reality through Ishmael’s eyes.
A phenomenal memoir; I use this memoir as a English Language unit w/my high school students! Important, relevant and significant!
