How lucky we are to live where we do. Raise our children without fear of what Ishmael lived through.
This books was a hard read but well worth it. It was awful to read as a young boy turned into what can only be describe as a monster and uplifting to read how he came back to humanity.
Amazing, eye-opening, shocking, upsetting, beautiful memoir. The plot was addicting because his story is just so unbelievable at every turn. I’d say the story is sort of naturally broken into 3 movements of the story: running, fighting, and recovering, but each part was crazier to read than the last. Great, fantastic story that inspires perspective and an overwhelming sense of gratitude
I read this book for a book club, and I am sort of glad i did. It is nonfiction and it is about a terrible topic, so its hard to say I "liked" it. However, it was interesting and educational. I did not like the abrupt ending, but every other bad thing in this book was because it was about conflict in Sierra Leone and not because it was poorly written (which it was not).
One that everyone should read at some point. There is no way to comprehend the horror just by reading the news. These are the evils that we don't want to believe exist and the ones we MUST acknowledge and fight against.
This book is an important one, but the writing style just did not work for me. I found myself avoiding reading not because the subject was terrifying and sad, but because it was written in such a detached, matter of fact way that did not bring to light the personal story within the narratives I have already read.
A stunning, heartbreaking and somehow hopeful testament to the human spirit. Everyone should read this.
It took me a while to get through this slim memoir because parts are so heavy it was difficult to read. Yet it's a story that needs to be told and I wanted to know what happened to Beah. And in the end, this book is a hopeful one, about overcoming the worst situation and starting a new life. A definite worthwhile read.
