Heartbreaking but a wonderful narrative of resilience.
Absolutely heart-breaking what those kids went through (are still going through?). But the hopeful tone and the amazing recovery by Ishmael and others like him show just how resilient kids are and how much heart goes into loving these kids and bringing them back to their humanity. A very good read.

Autobiography of a boy who was forced to fight in the civil war of Sierra Leone. From innocence, to soldier, to therapy. Amazing that he could survive all of it. Couldn’t stop reading.
devastating example of what human beings are capable of at their worst. sometimes the world is too dark and scary and sad to understand, and i'm glad i can retreat into my quiet and safe bedroom. but i can stay there only for a little while before anger takes hold and i remember things will never change if i -- and others -- just stay and hide in our quiet, safe bedrooms.
also heartwarming that this kid can survive and tell his tale and go on living his life speaking out against these horrors.

Such a heartbreaking account of war and the terribleness of children having to fight.

A beautifully written, painful story. Beah's descriptions of the war are often difficult to read and quite traumatic, but his story is incredibly important. His writing style is unique and absolutely stunning, and his words have a mesmerizing quality. Beah most certainly has a gift for storytelling.
