I first heard about Ishmael Beah on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; Beah was Stewart’s guest one evening. Stewart’s quote on A Long Way Gone was, “Your story made my heart hurt.” I definitely agree. Beah was a boy soldier in Sierra Leone: his family was killed, and he barely survived. There are true horrors found here, ones that should drive each reader to a desire for social justice.

This is an important book, but it is not by any means an easy one. And while A Long Way Gone shows a great deal of evil, there is also redemption and grace present. Having said that, this is not for those who want to remain naive or those who have weak stomachs.

I would recommend this book to high school students. It is a very interesting and detailed book but is sometimes hard to understand if you are younger. I think this book will really help readers see and imagine how a life of a soldier boy is. This book will allow readers to have a better understanding and have a more open mind to the topic.

it reads like a novel. i had to keep reminding myself it wasn't. i found it both painful and important.

"... People complain when there is too much sun and it gets unbearably hot, and also when it rains too much or when it is cold. But, she said, no one grumbles when the moon shines. Everyone becomes happy and appreciates the moon in their own special way. Children watch their shadows and play in its light, people gather at the square to tell stories and dance through the night. A lot of happy things happen when the moon shines. These are some of the reasons why we should want to be like the moon." - pg. 16-17

"When I was very little, my father used to say, 'If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person, he or she will die.'" - pg. 54

"'Every time people come at us with the intention of killing us, I close my eyes and wait for death. Even though I am still alive, I feel like each time I accept death, part of me dies. Very soon I will completely die and all that will be left is my empty body walking with you. It will be quieter than I am.'" - pg. 70

Unlike the other books I read for school this one was actually interesting. I thought it was good because you don’t hear a lot about war from an child’s perspective so this was different from many things I’ve read
