This is an account of horrific events, it is gut wrenching and reflective, and within a lifetime of despair there seems to be a sliver of hope that remains. Thank you so much Ishmael for being so brave to share your story and to show us that war is never the answer. "I've come to learn that if I am going to take revenge, in the process I will kill another person whose family will want revenge; then revenge and revenge and revenge will never come to an end..."

Honestly I don't even know what to say about this book. It's a hard read, but a very important one.

The author does not shy away from the horrors of war they experienced and participated in as a child. Fyi it's fairly explicit, with a lot of on page death.

Reading this particular book was a momentary challenge because though I knew who the "boy soldiers" were, I was not overly familiar with the civil war in Sierra Leone. To understand why these children were dragged into this war, one had to understand the conflict. So I was lazy and did a quick wikipedia search. After that, I passed through the book easily.

The only difficulty in reading this novel is the manner in which it makes your heart hurt as your read about what this young man went through, what he came back from, and what he almost got caught up in again. The novel is such an easy read I was able to finish it within a few hours. When I say easy read, I don't just mean the ebb and flow of the language but also the content drives you to continue on because you just want to see this young man escape it all, so you don't want to put the book down.

A fantastic novel that lends the reader a glimpse into events in the part of the world that are often forgotten or ignored.

First off, I read this book in one sitting. In fact, I only read this book yesterday. I did not participate in Diverseathon but I’m sharing this review as my own little way of showing support to its cause.

I bought this book exactly a year ago not knowing anything about it except remembering my Dad mention it or was it someone else? I saw the title, I saw the cover and it rang a bell. It was on sale so, naturally, it went with me when I left the bookstore. I always see it in my shelf when I pick up a book to read. But it was only yesterday when I was staring at my books choosing for a book to bring with me that I felt it was time for me to read A Long Way Gone.

I ran all my errands knowing that when I found a downtime during the day, I have this book in my bag to keep me occupied. That time came and I brought it out, I started reading it and I never stopped. I was very engrossed in the story that no bladder break was taken.

It was December 2015 when I last read a non-fiction, which was I am Malala. Thinking about it now, this may only be the second non-fiction book I have read in my entire lifetime. Thankfully, I have made good choices on what books to read for I have enjoyed my reading experience with both books. I’m asking you guys this early now. I would appreciate it if you share and comment below your favorite non-fiction book.

Okay, okay. I’m getting waayyy sidetracked. Ishmael starts his story a few days before “all hell broke loose” in his hometown at Sierra Leone. He was thirteen… with all that happened to him, you can’t help but be thankful because everything lead to him staying alive. His journey, his experiences, his flight and fight for survival. The only “trial” I had when I was that age was me staying in a dormitory inside my high school that’s 30 kilometers away from home. Side note, I was only 3 when these were happening to him.

I thought I won’t be able to finish reading his story because when the first war scenes were being described, it was too graphic for me and I honestly felt sick, I need to stop reading and take a breath. Imagine, if reading about it is sickening, how much more when you’re actually there witnessing the brutality of these acts. His storytelling is raw; unfiltered.
Personally, what the hell are we doing? Why bother with politics bullshit when people like Ishmael needs our attention, our immediate help. All these talking but the actions being done is not enough to save the civilians, the innocent, the refugees.

I always say this to all the books I review – read this book. You know, this should be an assigned reading material in high school or even in college. It’s an easy read. The words are not heavy, it’s not trying to be or sound philosophical; totally readable for teens. Some people are hesitant to read non-fiction because of this idea that they’re heavy reads. This one is not. Don’t just make them write book reports about this, have a discussion with the class. Children today, you know the kids who are not between crossfires, are beyond clueless of how lucky they are to have the lives they are living.

I just want to squish Ishmael in an awkwardly familiar hug and tell him how happy I am that he survived. Definitely 5 out of 5 stars read for me, and probably for you to if you listen to my recommendation and read his book.

One of the most well written and emotional books i have ever read

I read this book as an assignment for school, and to be honest i didn't expect to like it considering biographies are not a genre i've ever enjoyed, but i cojld not have been more wrong. This book was so well written and emotional, i can admit that had tears in my eyes at some parts (i am being 100% serious, i actually cried), and couldn't help but smile at other parts. You actually feel as if you are going on this journey with Beah, and i don't think i've ever been as emotionally invested in a book as i have with this one. If you are looking for a book that you will get lost in, then this is the one for yoy
