This book made me realize that fae love interests are literally the new vampires. I am ready to die on this hill.
I also strongly believe that books should not all be rated on the same scale but according to what the are trying to be. I'm pretty sure this book was trying to be an emotional and whimsical fantasy romance so... I think it succeeded! I love an easy fantasy romance *standalone* where I don't have to get invested in a series of 3+ books. The world was interesting, the relationship was spicy (very questionable imo, but spicy), and the ending was satisfying while still leaving things to the imagination. Definitely will pick up the newer Margaret Rogerson.

A cozy book about fae and their dangerous quirks, and the girl who is absolutely determined to avoid all their nonsense and just be left alone to paint.
Quick read, the world building is easy to understand and the descriptions of the setting are fleshed out and vivid to the mind's eye. The plot doesn't go very far, but is satisfying for what it is, resolutions being tied up in a neat little bow as call-backs to earlier in the story that will make you go "Aha! I remember that!". The romance itself is a bit "instalove"-y, but the banter between them as they reluctantly struggle to understand eachother makes up for it. Overall, a very whimsical and fairy tale-ish story in the vein of the classic "we aren't meant to be together" trope.

It's no secret that the love interest, Rook, is a fae- and therefore who-knows-how-many hundreds of years old- however with a 17 year old protagonist, some lines get crossed in ways that some may not approve of.
