Wow. This story, much of it based on actual events in history, was amazing. I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. The women in this story have the kind of strength and fire that I aspire to. Despite the mistakes they have made along the way, they are women worth looking up too. Can not recommend enough.

4 stars for Eve’s story and 3 stars for Charlie’s.

This book is told through two characters in different times: Eve during the thick of WWI and Charlie post WWII. Eve was a British spy at a time when women were expected to stay home and keep the home fires burning or to tend to wounded soldiers on the battlefield. The fact that Eve’s story is based on a real network of female spies is nothing short of extraordinary. Eve’s story was gripping and suspenseful and kept me going through Charlie’s less interesting chapters. Charlie is a privileged college student who got knocked up and was whisked away to Europe by her mother to “take care of her little problem”. She naively decides to run away to find her lost cousin. Her story did get better as time went on and the ending for both stories was fabulous.

I listened to this on Audible and found myself, on more than one occasion, lingering in the car just to hear more. And this story did make me add Edith Piaf to my playlist and look up Baudelaire’s poetry.

Highly recommended.

Really the only thing I didn’t like about this book was the main character (who is good at math) would always put her situations in these cheesy fake math equations- like “one boy plus one bottle of wine divided by whatever equals a bad night”. Couldn’t get over it. Otherwise, I was obsessed

Love love loved this book! I was still thinking about the characters and their stories long after I had finished it. I thought Kate Quinn did a fantastic job creating her own characters while incorporating the story of the amazing Louise de Bettignies and all the others who were involved with the Alice Network. This is currently my new favorite book and will most likely be for a long time.

Kate Quinn has a new fan!

Love, World war, spies.. What more do you need? It flipped between the past and present to tell a great story about female spies during Both world wars.
