I read the book in 3 days, it was so much fun I didn’t want to put it down. Yes, the story might not be original - nobody has ever written anything like this type, but does that even a thing anymore? I really enjoyed the story, the ambiance was perfectly executed, the characters were fun and funny. It almost made me feel like watching a movie. If you are into horror, small town mysteries, but you want an easy to read book, this is the one.

Darcy Coates is the queen of horror in my eyes. This is her first YA and I was so pleased that it was just as scary as many of her other books though it felt completely different than many of her books.

Abby Ward lives in a strange town where people randomly go missing regularly. Because of this the town doesn’t stray out after dark and Abby, her sister, Hope, and her group of friends have strict rules that they follow. The group of friends are dedicated to getting out of the town and learning as much about the mysterious villain they call the Stitcher (as the victims will reappear stitched together wrong with red thread) so they don’t become his (its?) next victim. But when Hope goes missing Abby is desperate to do everything she can to get her back and not have her be the Stitcher's next victim. With the help of her friends and a newcomer to the town she goes after her sister and uncovers just who (or what) the Stitcher is.

While this is such a dark and sad story in a dark and sad town I couldn’t help but love the characters. The group of friends all have unique qualities and personalities and their relationships with each other are heart warming. The townspeople are well written and the villains are absolutely creepy. My favorite part is trying to piece together if this is supernatural or just the work of a serial killer. Without giving anything away I can say there are some downright terrifying scenes. Between the group digging into the town’s history to the action packed scenes I was entertained throughout the whole thing.

Darcy Coates is amazing. Everything about this story made me feel uncomfortable & unsettled in the best way. I couldn’t stop reading & had to force myself to slow down because I was trying to read as fast as I could.

Thank you to Sourcebooks Fire and Darcy Coates for sending me a complimentary copy! I received this through Netgalley for an early review and it doesn’t affect my opinions in any way.

Abby Ward is from the small town of Doubtful, Illinois. A town haunted by an eerie past shrouded in mystery and death following the many disappearances over the years. The Stitcher; man or monster? with its unknown identity believed to be behind the mysterious missing persons cases. This is why Abby and The Jackrabbits are a stickler for rules that keep them alive and safe from the horrors of the monster. However, when Abby’s sister goes missing, she is determined to risk her life to get her back. Together with her friends, they set out to end The Stitcher’s killings once and for all.

Darcy Coates is an impeccable writer that knows her way around a exhilarating small town horror standalone and i would really love to explore more books written by her. This was my first time reading a book by Coates, but this was so freakishly unsettling and eerie to read because the prose is laced with lots of tension and suspense. The friendship dynamics between the teenagers in this book was incredibly well written and fun. I also loved the little romance subplot that just added so much more appeal to this already promising story that it’ll be difficult for me to find a book that’s on par with the kind of thrill Coates’ writing offers.
