It's the kind of book that's worth multiple reads -- the first time for the plot that doesn't quit and the second time to suss out the characters and how Galsworthy handles them and how that character handling shapes the arc of this series. I was intrigued by how untouchable Irene was and how Galsworthy reinforced that by only ever portraying the surface of her, even as he delved into the thoughts of other characters swirling around her, like Soames. The distance that technique created between me as the reader and Irene was just about the only thing that made Soames a sympathetic character.
