A beautiful compendium of some of the weird and wonderful books produced throughout history.

Wonderfully written and full of amazing tomes. The incredible stories attached to some of these strange books were so well researched and retold by the author. The pictures are also amazing.

Absolutely fascinating! Anyone who has any interest in books should pick this up! So much history, necessity and just plain oddity in here. Excellent photos, wonderful explanations. What a joy this must have been to research and write and it's also a joy to just sit back and devour. I actually took quite a while to enjoy this book. Paging back to review favorites, calling people over to look at things I found interesting. This book was a complete experience for me (and often those around me). Bravo, and thank you for this one!

This was fantastic, weird and educational. (In a whaaaaat? sort of way)
Love the fact that there were pictures provided to go along with the text.
I especially loved the parts where authors took time to discredit each other, years crafting elaborate schemes. (Jonathan Swift especially.)

I want a modern version exploring the underbelly of fanfiction and Wattpad world.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I think this is a perfect gift for all bibliophiles, literature enthusiasts, and collectors out there who are intrigued by the unusual, fascinating and history of books/reading. This looks at the history of the bizarre, unusual, and fascinating books and documents in human history. It is well researched and with amazing illustrations to go along.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I need a copy of book, I need it to exist in my book shelves asap. It was filled to the brim with awesome, funny, scary horrifying stories. My favorite story was the story of the war prisoner Peter Moen.
The Japanese farting competitions was hilarious, and the human skin book binding was horrifying. I had a sneak peek to the French revolution's atrocities with that maid pants story and smiled at the authors at the hoax section of the book.
