4.5 stars—I think I preferred Middlemarch, but still loved this! It got me emotional by the end.

Silas Marner, a weaver by trade, is reduced to lonely circumstances when he is wrongly accused of theft and moves to Raveloe. While there, Silas lives a quiet existence, tending to his loom and counting his gold.
Godfrey Cass, one of the Squire of Raveloe's sons, has secretly gotten married and finds himself in an unfathomable to him but expected predicament, leaving him at the mercy of one of his brothers.
Though Silas and Godfrey seem to be living in different spheres in Raveloe, their lives become entwined after one winter when Silas loses all of his precious gold and finds a child left at his hearth.
George Eliot, like the weaver in her story, weaves the separate threads of her narrative and brings them together in this wonderfully created and structured plot. Symbolism abounds in this novel where Eliot examines country life, religious views, superstitions, and the idea of fostering/adopting children.
From what I gather, Silas Marner is the last of Eliot's early novels and one whose themes are further touched upon in [b:Daniel Deronda|304|Daniel Deronda|George Eliot|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320432000s/304.jpg|313957]. And though its pastoral setting and characters are similar to [b:Adam Bede|20563|Adam Bede|George Eliot|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1167298252s/20563.jpg|21503633] and [b:The Mill On The Floss|20564|The Mill on the Floss|George Eliot|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1309202768s/20564.jpg|3277447], Silas Marner is an almost condensed version of the themes in the two with a very fairy-tale-like atmosphere about it: the creepy weaver who lives in isolation, the beautiful orphan child, the loom, the gold...
A wonderful read in which the slow start is more than made up for by its ending.
