I was finally able to score a physical copy. What a brave and startling collection from one of the greats.

Both the essays and poetry in this collection were deeply moving. I don’t think I’ve fully engaged with a work that was written and discussing the aids crisis as it occurred. This should likely be something all people are educated in because some of the points and meaning in Hemphill’s works has thoroughly changed my perspective and outlook.

"I smell your lust,
not the pot burnt black
with tonight's meager meal.
So we can't buy flowers for our table.
Our kisses are petals,
our tongues caress the bloom.
Who dares to tell us
we are poor and powerless?"

It is a pity that I had to return this borrowed book.
