I received a galley of this from net galley, but in no way does that affect my rating/review.

This was quite an emotional read. I felt connected to Chris, even though a lot of the stuff she went through I hadn't ever experienced. I still felt like I related much to her character because she was my age, on top of being a runner and a writer like I am. I also felt like Chris grew a lot from that first chapter where we saw her just skirting the surface of life, not truly living it. She was letting her depression drown her, almost destroying her. But she got a second chance at life and took it. She let in new people in her life, those people helped her see how precious living her life to the fullest was. She ended up writing a memoir using her deceased sister's artwork and poetry to complete her own story, melding both their stories together. By doing this, it helped her completely heal and overcome her depression.

I recommend this to readers looking for a great contemporary to read while laying out on the beach, or even snuggled at home on a rainy day. Readers who enjoy Kristin Hannah's novels will devour this novel.

Running Secrets tells the story of Chris and Gemi and how they form a friendship that heals both of them. Chris is suffering from depression and tries to end her life. Gemi is hired to take care of Chris as she heals. I was pleasantly surprised with how well-written this book was. I loved learning about both Chris and Gemi, while very different each women was characterized wonderfully. Though I thought the book was primarily going to be about Chris and her healing from her past, I was glad to learn more about Gemi as well. I felt connected to both women and loved their characters. This book was about acceptance and more specifically self-acceptance.
The subject matter was heavy and dealt with a lot; I was nervous it would be too much for one book. However, the story was so well-written that it all flowed together and didn’t seem like too much was in the plot. Overall, it was an intriguing read that will stay with me for a while. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley.
