Wow, I am surprised how hard I found this to read. It was hard to get into, then got boring, then interesting, then I almost gave up on it. I realized I only had 50 pages left so I might as well finish - and it did get better at the end. I honestly seemed to only enjoy when Tarkin was on Eriadu... I gained a little insight into Tarkin, but nothing that really changed how I saw him, so quite a let down.
"He was accused by lovers and others of being heartless, but it wasn't true; it was simply that his heart was here, in this pristine part of his homeworld."
All I can say is genius! Not as genius as Thrawn because I don't think anyone would be as brilliant as Thrawn ever is and/or was, but Tarkin in his own way is brilliant. I actually ended up enjoying this one and it was the perfect pace, writing, story for an origin of this iconic character who we only got to see in movie 4 before he died on the first Death Star. And yet this character I feel like is one of those villain's who you love to hate and one you'd get excited to see especially after he had a cameo in the Clone Wars TV series, then Timothy Zahn puts him in his Thrawn canon book, finding out from a friend he also shows up in Rebels, and then to have also a canon story all on him is a dream come true. This was seriously well written for this character and a great backstory on top of that!

Very satisfying - I didn't really have high hopes for a novel based around a film franchise, but I had tons of fun reading it. it's a mystery story with great characterization for Tarkin. interaction with the Emperor and Vader was very enrertaining too. I listened to most of it while taking care of my newborn daughter....great experience :)
- Both Star Wars books by James Luceno have been pretty boring. I hope he doesn't write any more in the Star Wars universe. It takes a lot of talent to make a space battle boring.
- I enjoyed getting to know Tarkin. He is one evil dude! His whole family is messed up.
- I also liked the Tarkin, Emperor, and Vader dynamic. I didn't know Palpatine orchestrated Darth Vader and Tarkin working together, and that he always knew they were instrumental in his plans.

This book highlights Star Wars as it was originally supposed to be: a tale of true evil. Tarkin has no redemption unlike Vader. It is interesting to see the dynamic between Tarkin, Vader and Sidious, and especially the relationship between Tarkin and Vader.
This was a fantastic novel set in the world of Star Wars. I enjoyed it immensely. Great characterisation and writing.
