It's not that the things Applebaum writes in this book are unfamiliar, but what interested me most of all are the connections, the various ways shared by the kleptocracy or autocracy of using the media to shift attention or outright lie. As the author says, the problem is not so much identifying the lies, but rather the fear of the liar who lies in such an exaggerated way that you realize that his purpose is not so much that you believe it, but that you fear him because he can go that far. Scary.

Non é che le cose che scrive la Applebaum in questo libro siano sconosciute, ma quello che mi ha interessato piú di tutto sono i collegamenti, le varie modalità condivise dalle cleptocrazie o dalle autocrazie di utilizzare i media per spostare l'attenzione o mentire a tutto campo. Come dice l'autrice il problema non é tanto identificare le bugie, quanto piuttosto il timore del bugiardo che mente in modo talmente esagerato, da farti capire che il suo scopo non é tanto che tu ci creda, ma che tu lo tema perché puó arrivare a tanto. Spaventoso.

word salad honestly, lacking in any meaningful analysis. no mention at all of US/Western involvement in destabilizing countries and shaping past & current events
also using sanctions as a "gotcha" to highlight how these autocratic leaders resort to shady measures to maneuver around their financial restrictions... largely makes no sense when said sanctions are largely imposed by the US; like stealing money from someone and then accusing them of theft when they try to take it back
