I loved the plot. I thought it brilliantly original that a trained asset has developed amnesia but as circumstances arise his training and instincts kick in.
I'm not sure if I'm just not into Spy novels or the fact that the book is almost 45 years old and it's starting to show its age.
Is it odd that I like this series? The thing is, I've read Ultimatum 2 years ago. Spoiler much eh? Yes. But still I forgot 95% of it. So it was just fitting and proper that I finally got to read the first book. Ludlum was always my basis whenever I read Thriller/Crime stories from authors. There will always be that comparison for me here and there. And he's but the best. x
I enjoyed probably 95 percent of this book. It actually held up surprisingly well for how long ago it was written. Reading about characters dashing to a phone booth in the middle of being chased by bad guys gave it a fun throwback vibe versus high tech spy thrillers I’ve read.
I did enjoy the book. Much more complicated and intricate than the movie; but still enjoyed both the book and movie.
It is however, very confusing at times. Way too many characters and plot lines to keep up with for myself.

I read this in 1992. I don't think I can write much of a review but here is my 2 cents. First, I think this book is an excellent example of spy/thrillers. I remember staying up late at night because I couldn't put it down. Secondly, while the movie has major diversions from the novel there are two things of note: the movie embodies the spirit of the novel and they both could very well be the best at their respective media and genres.
Not too bad for a thirty-seven year old book. I liked it. Some good twists and surprises. Amazing character development and I liked them all, even the bad guys. There is a lot of detail that some would consider tedious, but I like the in-depth background.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A book that I loved, an absolute must read, and now a favorite of mine. It’s a book that will live on my shelves forever and I would re-read in the future. I would pick up anything else by this author without question. This book is now one of my all-time favorites,
I watched the movie before reading the book because I didn’t know it was one. I liked the movie but I LOVED this book. It had me hooked from page one. My only regret is that I didn’t read it sooner. It’s nothing like the movie. The character isn’t even described as looking like Matt Damn but if you’ve seen the move that is who you will end up picturing the whole book.
