Extremely different from the movie which is both a good and a bad thing. I would be all day listing the differences but overall, the differences probably come out net neutral.
The first half of the book is super slow to get moving, but when the intrigue and action did start happening, it was enjoyable.
If you like the movie, you'll probably like the book, but don't expect it to be similar in anyway except the main character names.
Enjoyment: 4/5
Writing: 4/5

You may have seen the movie and think you know how this story unfolds, but you'd be wrong. The book and movie have only the vaguest connection through a few of the characters' names and the basics. A man is fished out of the sea with gunshot wounds and amnesia. He and a woman named Marie race around Europe while people try to kill them. The CIA is involved somehow. That's about it.
This book is rich with detail and characters. The plot is complex and engaging, and the author describes well Bourne's PTSD interacting with the amnesia and causing his frustration and fear. I just wanted to throttle the American characters who only add to Bourne's struggles with their deep-seated belief in his guilt, primarily based on past experiences that almost amount to hatred of who he was before Treadstone. Marie is a more integral and important part of the story, both intelligent and strong. She aids Bourne in deciphering the mysteries of what is happening to him. Getting to know Ludlum's Marie makes me angry that Hollywood portrayed her as a rootless wanderer.
I'm looking forward to the next installment.

As I listened to the audiobook I felt really bored, and nothing was happening whatsoever and I just wanted to finish it. Then, after finishing the book I realised it was actually kind of good. The writing was very poetic and nice to read, the pace was comfortable and I understood almost everything - the exceptions were names and places and when they were speaking in French. I watched the movies before reading the book - the ones with Matt Damon and I overall like the movies, I don’t mind seeing them again, but I feel like you can’t compare the movies with this book because it’s almost two different stories. Like mixing apples and bananas - you just can’t do it.

Quite different from the movie. Not a bad story on the whole, but I think the movie was better.
