I finished this book in a day, which is a rare treat for me. I found Grans world so easy to slip into, so hard to put down. She says so much in so few words and I was completely compelled.

I've somehow found myself reading a lot of books lately where women struggle with sanity but this one rises to the top of the pile. The pace, the descent is stretched across the pages expertly. I had a few guesses where this was going and I couldn't put down the book, I had to find out. It's certainly a sad story that barrels towards inevitable horrific outcomes. But something about it absorbed me, and I'll be reaching for more books by Gran as soon as possible.

In terms of "scariness" level, I was a little nervous going into this as I don't actually like to be too scared, and it didn't freighten the shit out of me. It was more just unsettling and culminated in violence. There's a paranoia element that might take a day or two to dissipate from my mind completely, but I liked that the story conjured up an emotional reaction. It wasn't bloody terrifying in a jump scream horror movie kind of way though.

This book achieves a steady balance of gorgeously grotesque surrealism along side a grounded perspective. While I wouldn't describe the book as overtly 'funny', the frankness of the main character's narration has a sort of 'Fleabag-esque' quality to it; approaching it's dark and twisted plot with humour. The writing style was throughly engaging and I found myself siding with Amanda and even at times, with her demon.
