Amazing.  Utterly, horrifically, amazing.

A slow decent into madness........ or possession. Her husband Edward and those closest to her can't see it. Strange occurrences are written of as coincidence. Minor violent outbreaks are chalked up to stress. Somthing is going on..... dogs and small kids always know. They can't be wrong, can they?

I greatly respected the use of biblical references towards the "demon." It shows the care and research the author used when writing. Every word in this book was thought out and well placed. As a Christian, the whole thing scared me. How easily the "demon" took over. How the little clues go unnoticed and, if are noticed, are chalked up to everyday happenstance. It isn't until the entity fully took hold that the woman even noticed, and even then those closest to her dont. A gripping read in every sense of the word.

A realistic look into how the average person would react to getting possessed.
As in, a bunch of denial and more ‘sane’ explanations til it’s too late. You can sympathize with Amanda, with the way her life falls apart and she loses control. You can’t blame her either- because possession & demons don’t exist, right?

Could’ve done without the demons lore or whatever, as that didn’t interest me much but it didn’t take away from the story- wouldn’t you want to know everything about what’s happening to you?

I feel bad for her and her loved ones by the end of it all.

This is a great horror novella, and what really stands out is the writing. I’d call this literary horror. I’ve only read one demonic possession novel before, Head Full of Ghosts, and this one managed to do a lot more for me in half the amount of pages. The possession was as realistic as it could have been, and I really enjoyed the religious mythos woven into the demon’s backstory. The short scenes made each moment, especially between Amanda and her husband, that much more impactful. There are some truly horrific dream scenes in here. I do wish the ending had been a little more fleshed out, but the abbreviated nature of the ending fit the rest of the book. There were a couple descriptions in here that don’t sit quite right reading this book 20 years later, but these few word choices didn’t take me too far out of the story. I will definitely pick up her newest full length novel.

there’s no mystery or intrigue to this book - it tells you what it is and what it plans to do and then does it without skill. i’d seen this all over tiktok and figured i’d finish it in one sitting due to the length, but it took me a few days because of how boring i found it. i’m honestly shocked at the high-ish ratings on here considering how surface level the material is. i feel bad being so harsh, but i truly found none of it original or remotely scary. i’d recommend skipping this one.

“We could devote our lives to making sense of the odd, the inexplicable, the coincidental, but most of us don’t. And neither did I.”
