A highly thought-provoking and culturally informative collection of Christmastime observations by the author, who travelled to a variety of locations to experience traditional wintertime festivities. I was intrigued that Carnival was a large speculative tie to several of these traditions, which paints the excessively indulgent holiday in less than merry colors. I knew several of the winter monsters and legends listed, but this book gave a more in-depth dive into their significance and impact on practices performed in this modern day. I had expected a collection of chilling winter folk stories, like "The Winter Spirits: Ghostly Tales for Frosty Nights", but was pleasantly surprised to be given a more historical side of the monsters haunting yuletide.
