My rating 1⭐️ ticked no boxes for me - really fell flat!!
Pearl Blackwood is a waitress at a swanky restaurant in San Francisco with big dreams and no cash. Pearl’s life choices are a little of centre but she is making life work for her. Until one day she meets the charming, gorgeous Christopher McKinney.
Christopher sets his sights on Pearl and she can’t help but melt into his arms, there is the little issue of him being a psychopath… which throws Pearl for a loop. Surely though as their relationship turns into a whirlwind of romance and passion this wont be an issue… right??
Soon everything becomes a mind game with Christopher getting ‘Pearl IN DEEP’ she tries to free herself from his clasp but starts to think she may never truly be free of him…. Unless….
Oh Dear!!! I am sitting WAAAAAAAAAY out to sea on my island for outliers on this one. I think I am the only person who has read this book who did not enjoy it. I will be completely honest I didn’t enjoy any of it. I couldn’t get into the story at all… I disliked Pearl so much that I really just didn’t care what happened with her… and I found the whole thing to be corny and lame and kind of childish.
I get where this one was headed and I think if done differently it would have been a really good read but FOR ME it just didn’t hit the mark. When I was supposed to feel empathy for Pearl I just rolled my eyes, when I was supposed to feel scared for her… again eye rolling. The story was so circular that it barely kept me engaged. I wanted so badly to like it because I have liked a couple of the other Jolvix series but this one absolutely was not it for me.
The technology in this one just felt a bit over done as well… or maybe I was just over it… either way I struggled my way through this one and I am sad about that because I do like this author. I think though I might be done with the Jolvix universe for now because I seem to be living alone out here on my little island of 1 stars… might be time for a break.
I love a book with dark humour that really does interest me but even the jokes just felt over or under done. The psychopath storyline was too forced and almost satirical but it didn’t hit any notes for me either and I can do satirical with the best of them. There was no psychological thrills happening for me… not one time did I feel on the edge of my seat, thrilled or even moved in anyway other than to feel annoyed I still had more to read. Its a really bad sign for me.
Overall - I think I will keep it short because I don’t really have anything to say that would make me recommend this to anyone other than if you like this author and you liked all her others books then definitely give it a go - also look at other people’s review this was clearly a case of - sorry we are breaking up its me and not you… but I gotta be honest and I just did not enjoy my time with this one. I hope other readers have a better experience than me and I am glad to see so many already have.

I forgot how much I adore Faith Gardner’s writing. While her chapters might be short they’re absolutely riveting. If you like Sci-Fi and toxic relationships, this is your book!

I really enjoyed this book as whole and it was definitely a quick easy entertaining read, however, I wish there would have been more sci-fi dystopian esc elements like her other books.
I felt deepfakes were pushed kind of heavily to the background but I wish they would have been more prevalent to the story.
I also felt the ending (no spoilers) was not as satisfying as her other novels I have been binging lately HOWEVER
All of that being said I still devoured this book because she just had a way of writing that really makes you want to turn the page so even though I preferred the other books in this universe I still would recommend this book to everyone.
Also a comment I left on an earlier review about her dialogue being awkward does seem to have improved so I appreciate seeing any growth in any author.

Wow, the concept as psychopaths as being "neurodivergent" is a brilliant idea that could really be tapped into.
This book felt to me like two stories. The "first half" and then the "second half". Unfortunately, I didn't like Pearl (the MC). Doormat characters drive me crazy, and the ending was a bit anti-climactic. It also didn't have much to do with Jolvix, really?
I didn't like this one as much as "Amen, Maxine", but I'm definitely going to read the other books in the 'series'! (Each book is a standalone in the same 'universe', and can be read in any order.)

That might have been the most unlikeable FMC I’ve ever read. Just bypassing a million red flags, making dumb decision after dumb decision. Only finished it because it was a fairly short book and I’m bed ridden and bored.
