I fell in love with the whole cast of characters and I kept laughing out loud on my commutes to the point other passengers must've thought I was losing my mind.
The last 15% however felt very rushed plot wise, a lot of tell don't show with the revelations and false confessions. It made me feel as if we were never meant to solve the mystery on our own for the sake of plot twists. I feel there were more elegant ways to tie off the loose ends and pick up on both previous clues and the overall message of the book (which if I'm seeing it correctly is "the past/old people" vs "the present/young cops" and how there's good and bad things in both).

Super fun book to read, a delightful collection of characters, this book had me pondering, laughing, sad, and pause for reflection. Super entertaining & intriguing, highly recommended for mystery lovers and those looking for a mystery book that is a bit less grim. Perfect for a rainy or Snowy day read.

I know some people have said this first book is ok and the second is even better, but I thought this was charming!  The murder victims are not nice people, so you don't especially care about their deaths; it almost feels like the mysteries are not the point of the book, but I will say, I hadn't guessed the solution to the murders, so well-done there. The strength of this book, for me, lies in the characters.  I really loved our main four elderly investigators, their two cop friends (Donna especially), and Bogdan, the Polish worker/handyman.  There were also a lot of side characters who added a lot of enjoyment, and even tears, to the reading experience for me.  I would maybe knock a few points off for things being a little overly complex with the mysteries, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Great book, a compelling read. The author is amazing at making characters feel distinct. There are some great hilarious moments and some absolutely heartbreaking ones.
