 June Book Club Read

Long Story Short: When Joyce Meadowcroft is invited to join her retirement home's Thursday Murder Club, an eclectic group who investigate unsolved crimes, she jumps at the chance for a little adventure. Soon after, a murder occurs close to home, and the events that follow uproot secrets long hidden.

This story is a Matryoshka doll of novels - each revelation has another mystery inside. This is partially due to the sheer number of characters involved (24 listed in the Goodreads description, and I'm sure there are others). Considering the novel is titled The Thursday Murder Club and opens with Joyce being invited to join, I was surprised when there were so many POVs and side stories of many outside of the 4 in the group. I'm not fully on board with a few of the things that happened, but overall this was a fun (and funny) read that would also be good for a re-read. Several people in my book club say the series gets better as it goes along, with the fourth being the best, and I'd definitely be open to reading more about these characters.

CW: murder (obvi), suicide

Enjoyment: 4/5
Craft: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

Well, this was a delight. I enjoyed getting to know this quirky, lovable cast of characters - the murder solving was just an intriguing bonus, for me. I particularly liked getting a mix of narrators so we could see different perceptions of the same event or character.

My only qualm, perhaps, is how the final third felt both convoluted and a bit rushed, though everything came together in the end.

May be the series I’ve reread most this decade! The Thursday Murder Club and their adventures are always a delight, and a go-to comfort read for me.

i don't have much to say about this one, probably because i crammed the last 7ish hours on 1.5x speed today and my brain is no longer forming coherent thoughts. very, very british, especially the humor. pretty enjoyable. listening to this sort of book on audio always leaves me a bit nonplussed and confused, but i think i got most of what happened. the characters were very fleshed out and had their own believable traits and backstories. i enjoyed that osman didn't make them all these helpless old people and instead gave them agency and courage. i'm definitely interested in continuing to the next book.
