I listened to this on audiobook and I really enjoyed the narration. I have spent a lot of time in nursing homes, my mom has worked in one since I was a child and I also worked there for many years. It was easy for me to connect to the older characters, and I was moved by the types of struggles they face that are touched on in this book. It's a very funny murder mystery for sure, but there is depth as well. I laughed out loud, but I teared up and cried too.

This is charming but didnt really grip me.
There are a lot of characters to keep track of and while they were distinctive I did find myself losing track.
This did strike me as the sort of book my mum would love.
I'd classify this as a cosy mystery, if that is something you like then you may love this.

My thoughts and feelings on this are pretty much like those that I have for The House of Games..

The people/characters are a fun bunch but it's overall too relaxed for my taste. Though it kept me intrigued enough for answers to stick around until the end.

Final Rating - 3.5/5 Stars

My folks have both read this and I finally got round to reading it so we can have a little family book club discussion. The premise seemed so good (four pensioners at a sleepy retirement village attempt to solve a murder) and the way the mystery gradually unspooled was enjoyably intriguing, but the pacing was very slow to begin with. I know this was done for world-building purposes and to introduce us to the characters, but sometimes the story felt like it was meandering around the point a little too much.

Having said that, the four main characters were funny and interesting and I feel like books sometimes write off older characters as insignificant, so it was nice to read a novel where they were front and center. There were times when things the characters said played to/reinforced stereotypes that weren't really necessary, but on the whole this a light-hearted read.
