This is a fun, exciting, fantasy with a twist on magic that gives it more of a technical spin rather than a mystical slant. The author's skill in setting up incredibly dire circumstances with exhilarating victories.
I'm reading these books not because I love them above all other books but because I am curious how Tavi's story will play out now that I've invested time in the story. It's interesting enough but not particularly awe inspiring.
Tavi continues to be so damned good and perfect, which makes him somewhat boring to me. He always does the right thing and always comes out as the GOOD man, even when appearing to be less-than-perfect. I wish he were flawed in some way. I keep waiting for that to happen but should probably give up on that. I like Kitai because she, at least, has potential to be unpredictable and interesting.

Suitable for a commuting audiobook for those of us who can't listen to NPR any more. Butcher is a lazy writer of limited gifts who has nonetheless created a somewhat interesting world. He could really have used an editor; his descriptions are often hackneyed, cliched, and repetitive. Because he uses "Fury" to name the elemental creatures that power much of the world's magic system, it's really unfortunate that one of the words he overuses is "fury" in it's usual sense and also "furious." There are plenty of synonyms.
I'll listen to the rest of the series. But I don't want anyone to think I actually thought it was good.

Another amazing installment in the series!! The reason for not giving it 5 stars was because the beginning was slow and the Tavi reveals were a bit predictable. I still really enjoyed it though...great banter, romance, and action!

Not as action packed as the previous books, and was more of a setup for the next two books/finale. While the conclusion is fast paced I found everything that happens on a boat to be tedious. And it follows the trope that if you take a boat anywhere in a fantasy setting, you will be attacked by a sea monster.
