I read this book at a friend’s request, expecting to hate it. The blurb on the back cover immediately signals that it’s going to be fatphobic. To my surprise, I ended up enjoying it. It’s definitely fatphobic, and the author clearly has no idea what a 250 pound person looks like (he describes her as unable to fit in desks or through car doors, which is ridiculous). However, it’s a really heartfelt view of mental health, and finding hope when life keeps pushing you down in horrible way. I grew to love the main character a lot more than I thought I would, especially given how much she bothered me at the beginning.

CHECK CONTENT WARNINGS BEFORE READING!!! this book is so incredibly sad and so many effed up  things happen it’s unreal. I can’t tell if the commentary in this book is valuable or obnoxious.

This is my favorite book of all time. It follows the life journey of Dolores as she navigates trauma, relationships, body image, and growing up.

As a mentally ill fat girl, you know I had to pick this book up. It was incredibly dark but a definite page-turner for me. It felt fairly dated in how it handled topics such as gayness, fatness, and race. I wasn't the biggest fan of the ending; I was hoping for a little more catharsis after everything the book put me through.
