3.29 AVERAGE

Maybe I need to revisit this another time in a mindframe seperate from the previous three books. This prequel not only confused me with the big cast of characters it introduces that then have different names than their original, but also felt like a whole different genre. Although it wasn't bad, it gave Hannibal an OP edgy villian we are supposed to love vibe, and also doesn't do much to explain why he does what he does in the future. In addition, I also think I'm just not really compelled to know much about him and his background as much as I just apreciate his presence in the other books. To have his backstory layed out to me kills some mystery of his character which is a big part of the intruige with him.

free hannibal, he did nothing wrong in paris

I think I read the first three Hannibal books ages ago (Red Dragon, Silence, Hannibal). Just went back and re-read them all in order, including this one for the first time. Not surprisingly, Silence of the Lambs is the shining star. It really is quite good. Red Dragon is decent. The last two, not so much. Hannibal Rising is an attempt at an origin story. An attempt to explain how Hannibal, the bright young son of a count growing up in a castle in Lithuania became Hannibal the Cannibal. We see some atrocities in WWII and Hannibal gets even. It serves as an OK revenge story. He kills the men who ate his little sister. Possibly ate parts of one of them, but maybe just staged it to look like that. And that's pretty much where it ends. How does he go from avenging angel to the personification of evil, killing indiscriminately, that we see in the earlier stories? There is an attempt to explain they psychology behind that, but it fails, IMO. And there's the whole weird thing with Lady Murasaki, his surrogate mother figure / almost lover. Weird.

how bittersweet that i've finally finished the hannibal series! i think it was so smart of harris to do a prequel and give us some insight into how hannibal became the absolute menace that he is. if there’s one thing that harris is good at, it’s writing an absolutely gut-wrenchingly tragic backstory.

This book will always be near and dear to my heart because it is the last book that I read to my dog before she passed away. Sadly that doesn't make the book good. I'm sure she didn't understand why I was torturing her on her deathbed with these poorly developed characters, and generally shoddy plot lines in this prequel to the Hannibal franchise.
Hannibal Rising promises to detail out how Hannibal became our favorite cannibal, but instead it re-writes the character in such a way that it leaves the audience wondering why we're interested in him in the first place. With throw away romantic sub-plots and constant reiteration about seeking revenge, Hannibal Rising feels more like Hannibal Falling. It doesn't seem like Harris knew where he was going with this, or had read his other books. Must for a die-hard fan in order to say they've finished them all, pass for everyone else.
