I would have liked to learn more about her business. It was such a long book and I still barely understand how she became rich
Didn't finish this, but it was good. Just not in the mood for it when I read it.
3.5 stars. I loved that it was based on a true story and I learned something about the history of the West Indies. But I thought the middle dragged, with too much unnecessary emphasis on the main character’s love ( read sex) life. It wasn’t overly graphic, just tedious.
An interesting story, but the writing left me wanting more. There were too many characters and Dorothy's reasoning felt unnatural at times. I wanted to know more about her businesses, how she sacrificed so much, and how she kept striving. Yet it felt like the main focus of this book was the various men who used her and manipulated her and, sometimes, loved her. I felt like this book focused less on Dorothy Kirwan Thomas and more on the men in her life.
slow-paced
I wasn’t really listening when it was in it required some concentration and I wasn’t in the right headspace for it.

The book was long and there were a lot of characters to keep track of. It wasn’t until I read the authors note that I realized it was based on a real person. I was not aware of what went on the islands in the 1800s and learned so much. I listened to the book and read it to help it go faster.
Liked the story- I was rooting for the main character.
