I won this as an ebook via Goodreads. Wow. What an absolutely beautiful, difficult, important book. I hadn’t heard of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas before this book. She was definitely an important player in the Caribbean and her story should be more widely known. In terms of story-telling, I think the author did an excellent job with the character development (particularly with Dolly, Cells, and some of Dolly’s children). Descriptions of the setting were also excellent. I felt at times like there were too many characters to follow, but I also don’t think you cant tell this story without including them. All in all, one of the best books I’ve read this year, would recommend to anyone who is in search of a book concerning itself with that time period or a book with a lesser known historical figure.
