Experiencing this as an audio book highlighted just how violent this book is!? The overall story is a worth-while commentary on the evolution of societal systems and leadership while also being a mad blitz of adventure via games and trials (eventually).

Read this book first in 2024 I think and then put it down at 50% because I couldn’t get into it. Jump to 2025 and I listened to the audiobook. I loved the narrator and I loved the song at the end. I liked how it was like The Hunger Games but people formed houses instead of just simple allies.

Fast-paced, brutal, and very Hunger Games-meets-Roman-epic. Not a light read, but super entertaining. Not sure I'm ready to dive into the rest of the series yet. Might need a cool-down period.

I am disgusted by that ending

Honestly, I'm surprised by the grip this book had on me. I enjoy sci-fi however I tend to watch more of it than I do read. This sat on my TBR for far too long. I thought it might be hard to follow, but it wasn't at all. The author paints a pretty vivid picture without being wordy. The character development is great. They playful banter of the fellas had me laughing at times, it was a nice addition.

If what I'm hearing is true, and this is ONLY the setup for the rest of the series, I don't know if I'm ready for Golden Son because this was FIVE fantastic freaking stars.
