I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It was a recommendation from a co-worker. I thought the themes of sex and aimlessness/pointlessness were powerful. The last lines of the book were beautiful.

strangely conflicted about this one. i hate hemingway's juvenile writing style. i didn't like the characters nor the message of the book or anything else in particular, aside from a few shorter parts where he (in his own bland way of course) described the overall environment, routine, etc (ex. the last chapter). i also appreciated the ending + the closing line. it's a 3-4 star read but due to the first third being awful i'm bumping it down to a 3.

In contrast to A Farewell To arms, The Sun Also Rises has some great, engaging, readable dialogue. It's mostly about vast quantities of booze, of course, and where to drink next, and how "tight" someone's feeling and how another drink might fix that. The book really shines at the bullfights: the raw, animalistic energy shown by bulls and men; the clarity of thought about what makes a great bullfighter great; the interplay between control, and the uncontrolled — even as that is mirrored in the relationships between the characters. A great read.

My senior year Creative Writing/War Lit teacher assigned this to all her classes, and all my friends hated it. I definitely can see why.
But personally, I loved it. It was beautiful, though at times I find Hemingway's writing a bit confusing. It was emotional. It was very interesting (I love expatriate stuff), and I loved the characters. I'd like to revisit it someday.

Hemingway is a master of descriptive imagery. He sets the scene so well that you are walking along the story with all of the characters. I marked the pages that noted specific locations to add those to my travel inspiration list too! The story presents an interesting combination of cynicism, humor, bullying, and friendship.
