“You, a foreigner, an Englishman, have given more than your life.”
Not being an expert in Hemingway by any means, this felt like an epitome of Hemingway in many ways. Like the David Copperfield of Hemingway, a comparison I would be much more willing to make had I ever read David Copperfield. But it had the Hemingway style of saying a lot by saying nothing on the surface. I liked this more than anything I’ve read by Hemingway because of the juxtaposition of the wandering people of the 1920’s with the extreme ritual and expertise of the bullfighting. Really cool literary technique. There’s also a lot of hidden wit, though it’s mostly just like sad English people wit. So give and take.

It is difficult to read due to the nuance of all the characters. Makes you really read in between the lines, but once you’re hooked it’s an enjoyable book.

DID NOT FINISH: 54%

Didn’t feel like the right season of my life to read this. Plus it’s a tough read.  I’d like to finish it someday though.

Dull

I was incredibly tempted to abandon this book due to its dull writing style.
The sheer volume of unnecessary details was overwhelming, the plot was virtually nonexistent, and the characters lacked any real depth.
It honestly felt like a waste of time. However, a few days later, I found myself repeatedly reflecting on their trip, the fun they experienced, and even the very details that initially bored me.
So, although it's far from a great book, the author undeniably managed to make the story stick with me.

a strange and difficult read at first; but i simply couldn’t stop reading. i had to look this book up on reddit and get some more context of the book, and that helped me get into the right perspective to understand the book. i liked the way it progressed towards the end a lot. also learned a lot about bull fighting. a poetic, nonsensical metaphor that was just interesting as hell to read.
