Best part of this was knowing how Joker’s face got the way it did. Penguin has never been a villain I’ve enjoyed reading (too much “Wah”ing), hence the middling rating.

It's best for everyone just to avoid this snooze-fest. There are so many great batman volumes out there, and this sure isn't one of them.

I don't know what it is about Tony S. Daniel that always makes me feel like he's throwing in last-minute weird additions to make everything "grittier." To me, there's an almost whimsical weirdness to the best Batman stories. They're partially fucked up, but they're also giddy with the glorious hero that is Batman. Daniel goes for harsh on harsh on harsh, and, pretty soon, it's just a cold, desolate read. I get it, Gotham City is boned beyond belief. That's the entire history of the city, its decay. But I don't need a mirthless way of storytelling. I want a compelling one. And this one was violent and exceptionally compelling in moments, but the payoff hasn't even come close to happening. However, there's one scene/panel/plotline in there that is goddamn fantastic.

I don’t ask much from a Batman comic other than pulpish/ noir stuff and some actual detection. This book tantalises the reader with both at several points in the book but keeps on dropping the ball, so nothing seems resolved and any threats just sort of wander away. The second half of the book is almost absurdly rushed in art and plotting, with confusion as to what’s going on and some eccentric narrative decisions (to put it mildly)

I received this book free from Goodreads' first reads.

When DC started the new 52 I knew I wouldn't be able to afford to read all the different Batman comics. I chose two, but Detective Comics was not one of them. I now regret this decision.

The way this story begins is creepy beyond words. The first third of the book is hands down the best part. From there the plot thickens. Getting more complex and drawing in more and more villains. And of course the best thing about Batman is the villains. This is of course an ongoing storyline that I now NEED to keep reading. I guess I'll be hitting my local comic shop soon.

One more thing. When I said the book is creepy it is due in large part to the amazing and disturbing artwork.

Crazy gruesome. Good stuff and really dope art but oh man I don't know if I can keep going with Daniel...might have to try another batman run.

I'm not reading these comics in the order I should be, so there are things that get left out from not reading the other series alongside this one. Turns out the last Batman comic I read should have been read after this one, but oh well. Makes more sense now! Interesting and slightly disturbing theme, what with Joker removing his face and all. But I was kind of hoping he'd have more involvement beyond that in this volume. The cover for Death in the Family makes more sense now, too, though, so maybe it'll be quite a bit of reading before any further clues are shed on that particular matter.

Most interesting part of this collection was Dollmaker and they didn't even follow that through to a conclusion.

This was so dark and twisted, I loved it.
