This would have been so cool if it wasn't written like Julia Stiles hacker monologue from "Ghostwriter" (though given the timeline, that monologue could have been written to sound like this!). It's fine for a short bit like in Ghostwriter (which is also tempered by that fact that... not everything is like that) but it's incredibly tedious to read, perhaps especially if you're more of a casual sci-fi-er like myself. Anyways, disappointing because I wanted to enjoy the time I spent in this world and I love Sumerian shit but alas. It's a no from me, console cowboy.
slow-paced

This wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't for me.

It felt like a lot of sections had nothing but info dumping and the plot barely moved. I also found it overwhelming and hard to understand (which is also just a sign it wasn't for me.)

I really wanted to like it because it's one of my husband's favourite books but I really struggled with it. I was really bored for a lot of it, and found it hard to push through reading.

The characters themselves were really interesting though, and I enjoyed seeing the dynamic between some of them. The writing itself was really good. The beginning was also really strong and intriguing.

I will definitely try more Stephenson books because I liked the writing, and I've heard that other books are better.

This book is unbelievably bad.

It feels like it was written by angsty teenager with a limited understanding of theology, sociology and computer software.

And that's the worst thing about it. Stephenson's techno futuristic world is evocative. It draws you in, so much so that you can smell the places he describes. It's such a shame that the plot and Stephenson's inability to trust the readers critical thinking skills, ruins it.

This book didn't have to be 71 chapters long. There are entire sections that could be removed to make a more interesting read. There are chapters and chapters of the characters exposé dumping revelations that were revealed in the previous chapter. The characters themselves don't hold much substance. Nobody talks like these characters, it's almost infuriating reading their dialogue and actions.

This sucks. The premise, the characters themselves, the world it's based in are so individually interesting but the execution is horrendous. The only reason I can't rate it lower is because it could've been interesting! It could've been a really good book! Instead I have to live with the what if's and what could've been's.

There's no denying that Snow Crash is self-aware, over the top, and somewhat cheesy. The plot is pretty good, but its main draw is the fantastic world building and criticisms of late-stage capitalism and technological fetishism. It drags a bit in the middle, and like a lot of cyberpunk has third-act/resolution problems. "Hiro Protagonist" might give you second thought to picking it up, but this book would not work as well if Stephenson had tried to take it more seriously.

holy SHIT.

Read this because it's supposedly a sci-fi classic. But instead I got an erotically-written PEDO sex scene, where the 15 year old female protagonist gets raped by a violent mass murderer twice her age? And why is she written to have enjoyed it?????? WHY was that necessary? Weird weird shit.

A shame, because the first few chapters are actually quite fun, and the book has some cool ideas. But a book written in the 90s should NOT be considered a classic, no matter how smart it is, if it peddles weird pedo fantasies.
