A mom sends her daughter on a treasure hunt to reveal stories from her past. A touching story with a 2nd half that will leave you turning the pages. The only downfall was I found the book to be a bit long in a few parts but other than that, a great read!
This book is so hard to rate. In the 2/3rd of it I almost didn't finish it. Thankfully my interest gave me incentive to try a little longer. I'm so glad I did because the last third was 5
I REALLY wanted to love this book. So many 5-star reviews set my expectations high going in, as I tend to favor a historical fiction piece. Unfortunately, it read too slowly for me to really develop a connection to the characters. This book is truly the definition of a sssslllloooowww burn and I hope others can find the enjoyment that I didn’t in this book.
The book had a solid story and was written beautifully - I can't quite put my finger on what was missing. Too predictable maybe? I'm honestly not sure but something kept me from really liking this one. It sure did make the tears pool though!
This was my first historical fiction book of the year. It started out pretty slow for me and I had trouble getting into the story. I found the chapters about Selina’s past much more entertaining than Alice’s, especially at the beginning. I got more into the story towards the middle, but if I was not reading this for a book club, I may not have finished it.
Not sure why I put this on hold at the library but it was a pretty quick read. Good for fans of Kate Morton, I would think.
I wasn’t sure about this December BOTM pick at first, but it exceeded my expectations. Absolutely adore Alice.
The story of Selina and Lawrence is gut wrenching, but not as much so as that of Alice and Selina. Overall, I enjoyed this week...I feel as though something is missing, but I can't quite put my finger on what...perhaps I just need more time to process the story...
3.5 stars - wanted to love it, but had a hard time keeping my attention.
