Me to me: “This book ain’t even sad, what’s all the fuss about?!”

Me:”...squeaky cry noises...”

Glad my kids are in bed so I don’t have to explain my emo self

Set in the early 20th century, this is your classic forbidden love story. Selina Lennox comes from a wealthy English family and falls for a poor artist. Unable to part from her family’s lifestyle and bring shame to herself and them, she marries out of duty and abandons love.

It took the story 250 pages to actually get interesting... and then ended in heartbreak. I can’t say this is at the top of my recommend list, unfortunately.

The story was great but it took forever to get into the good stuff. There were a few too many details I didn’t care about. Once the book finally got going though, it was hard to put down.

Lovely piece of historical fiction. It's definitely a love story rather than a romance, and at first I was put off by Alice's portions, but I think it worked overall. The structure works well, and there's a marvelous sense of the time period. I think there could be been fewer character perspectives--did we really need the piece from Alice's governess? I get having supporting characters with backstories, but still--but enjoyed it overall.

Almost 200 pages in and still bored? No thank you.

I would love to see this as a movie. The writing is so descriptive that I can see it perfectly in my head. It would be amazing to see on a screen.

I requested this book because of online hype. It did not disappoint.

Due to my obsessive Downton Abbey watching a few years back, the description of Blackwood Hall my mind immediately took me back to the Abbey. Only this time, the house is nearly empty after the end of the Great War. Little Alice is sent to Blackwood Hall, her mother's childhood home, while her mother accompanies her father on an international trip. Alice is homesick, and is not used to being stored away in a nursery, with only the company of a very strict nanny, and a very kind maid, who used to care for her mother, Selina. In order to counteract the homesickness, Selina leads Alice on a treasure hunt, that leads toward stories and secrets that have long since been quieted.

This ends up being a nice historical fiction and love saga that you won't want to miss.
