This book was gripping and put into words a storyline that is far too common among college students. While I am not a D1 athlete, I am a college student battling a mental illness. College is wonderful and amazing, but no one truly prepares you for the difficulties that come along with the transition. My hope is that books like these will spark honest conversations so that there will be fewer and fewer stories that end like Maddy's.

Thanks to Goodreads for sending me this book in a giveaway many moons ago. I have probably sat on this book for 6 years and finally sat down to read it. It’s not easy to talk about suicide, but being educated on the topic is important to me.

This book is written specifically about college aged people, which made it a relatable way to learn about how the population I (currently) interact with most may come to have suicidal thoughts. I was also able to reflect on my time in college and, thanks to Kate Fagan, feel seen and validated for much of my college experience.

I couldn't put this book down. It is a heart-wrenching story with important insights about depression, suicide, and the impact of social media on mental health. This book enlightened me on how perfectionism can result in mental unhealthiness (excessive pressure, negative self-perception, a stream of anxiety), and how this may dangerously intersect with social media -- by comparing our private lives with other public (filtered) lives on social media.

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge 2020 Task #1: YA nonfiction book
Part biography, part personal memoir narrative, part insightful examination of teenage/YA suicide. I can't recommend strongly enough parents and their teen and young adults reading this book.

As a former high school athlete, as a Type A perfectionist, as someone who grew up just outside and went to school in Philadelphia, as a parent, as someone who struggles with anxiety...this book rocked me. It’s going to stay with me for a long time. I hesitate to call such a tragic story a great read but o highly recommend this book to others.

Really powerful book, but I personally didn’t appreciate all of the authors anecdotes.
