Heartbreaking. A solid, well rounded piece of journalism.
I have so many personal connections to this book, it was hard not to be totally engaged. Two big reminders for me: (1) things are not always what they seem to be, and (2) be mindful of how social media - or even text or email - interactions are not the same as phone or in-person interactions.
This was a great book. The writing just flowed right off the page and it was a fascinating story. It led to a lot of interesting conversations among my family members as we talked about pressure, suicide, anxiety, and mental health.
I listened to this book and while the subject content is super heavy, I recommend it. The author reads it, and she does a good job. This is the story of Maddy, her family, the months leading up to her death, and the mental health crisis facing teens everywhere about to start college. Ugh. It broke my heart.
Wow. This book was fascinating, haunting, and heartbreaking. Kate Fagan did a remarkable job weaving Maddie Holloran's story together with insightful and enlightening content about the culture of loneliness, depression, and anxiety that can be exacerbated among college athletes specifically and young people in general, with a healthy bit of reflection on the role that social media can play. Without placing blame or over-simplification, and with sensitivity and conscientiousness writing about Maddie's life and death, and about suicide more globally, Fagan sheds light on contributing factors that lead some young people to seek the only escape they can see as a solution.
This is such a phenomenal book. I heard about Maddy's story when I was in college myself. It saddened me so much. This is a great read for any college student or graduate who has ever struggled with depression and anxiety in college or who has struggled with adjusting to college. Maddy's story resonates with many students and graduates today. This book also does a great job explaining the pressure that young adults and teenagers face in high school and the adult world.
An important read for coaches, athletes, parents, teachers, and psychologists
A hard in a positive way read. Fagan does an amazing job of telling Madison's story with clarity, honesty, and respect. No sensationalism. I recommend this book for, well, everyone. If you have kids, are kids, know kids; if you parent athletes, are an athlete, or watch sports on TV; if you breathe or know people who do, read this book.
