The book is generally informative, and there are lots of reviews talking about that. But I wanted to talk specifically about the asexual part because I am ace!

I would say that if you want info about asexuality, you should also read A Quick and Easy Guide to Asexuality in addition to this book. As for this book, while I appreciate that there is a section about asexuality, some parts are outdated.

Specifically, there is one part that says being sex-repulsed generally comes from trauma, which is certainly not always the case. There are tons of aces who are grossed out by sex whose aversion doesn’t come from related trauma. Perhaps the meaning of the term has changed in the past few years. I don’t know. I was not in the community when this book came out.

There is also only about a sentence or two related to aromanticism, despite asexuality having a whole chapter. I guess that’s because being aro is even LESS talked about than being ace. I think this would be a good topic to cover in one of these little guides.

2022 LGBTQA+ Pride Reading Challenge
Bonus Prompt: Continuing Education

This gets five stars not just for info, but the very important discussions on healthy vs. toxic relationships. I genuinely wished more nonfiction geared towards teens about growing up had this information in it, it is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT. But aside from that, I (as a cis-straight female) learned a lot from this little book and thought it was written smartly. Yes, some sections made me feel like I was reading a textbook, but there are times when the subject matter can't really be watered down. Even if you try to make it more personable to teens and dumb it down, you run the risk of either not presenting all of the information or making the subject matter seem silly or unimportant. Yes, it is important to make this accessible for teens, but its just as important to treat your subject matter with the respect it deserves.

This was a great little guide that I highly recommend to others. It gives worthwhile information while encouraging further research on the reader's part. Definitely worth the read.

Oh my gosh, just lovely. How cool would it have been for me to have this in like, eighth grade? I love the snails and the sproutlings, and I think this book is a great 101-type primer for important queer & trans subjects.

Even if you think you know all there is to know about gender, sexuality, etc I would bet there is something in this book you weren’t aware of. This should be required reading.

I like the art. It’s funnier than other information books, it had like one personal experience.

Of course loved the information, but the frame narrative was rushed and didn’t come full circle.

as someone who thought they knew everything abt being trans and queer (as a queer trans person w a love of researching) i actually learned a lot from reading this, so if you think you won’t gain anything from a basic guide, i’d still suggest checking it out
