This is one of the best mystery novels I have read in a long, long time. It doesn't necessarily follow the proscribed path of a mystery novel; it takes several characters associated with the murder and establishes them. The author then moves us 25 years later to the present to watch the cold case unfold. You really grow to care about these characters and that is the key to making this book a real edge-of-your-seat nailbiter.
I was skeptical about a mystery novel that seemed to have no clear direction on the main mystery but really being interested in the characters erased any doubts about my enjoyment of the book.
The reader of the audiobook is fantastic and if you choose to listen instead of read you won't be disappointed.

I wanted to like this b/c it was supposed to be similar to Tana French's Murder Squad books, but after 2 chapters, I was lost, confused and realized I didn't care. So I'm giving up and throwing in the towel on this one.

I hadn't read a good mystery in awhile and so I picked this up having heard that she is a excellent mystery writer. This was a excellent book! The story. Loved the characters, the plot turns and twists. Can't wait to read the next one in the series

Disappointing book. Too slow. Its meant to be the first book in the Karen Pirie book series, but you hardly see her. This is the lowest rated I have ever given to a book so far.

An enjoyable read. It wasn’t necessarily slow paced but it did take a long time to get to where it was going, with an awful lot happening in the last 50 pages.
I would read more of McDermid’s work

First time I have read a book by Val McDermid. It was plotted well and kept me guessing longer than I should have. It had twists at the end that were surprising; hence, my five-star rating.
