I had to read this in one day for school, and it was actually a fun read! Makes me wonder if all the other books my professor has been recommending are good as well.

Beautifully written but in some places it seemed to drag a little bit.

"Don’t underestimate how slender are the threads that bind us to the life we have." This story unfolds slowly, walking step-by-painful-step through the past murder that becomes the stone around four friends' necks who were witnesses/suspects of the death of Rosie. Yet the pace adds proper weight to the events and allows time to delve deep into the characters. I was impressed with how McDermid keeps you caring about characters whom you're not sure whether you should like. Plus, the story is steeped in Scottishness.

Unfortunately this left me a little underwhelmed. Recommended to me as one of the greatest crime writers I was really excited to pick up my first Val McDermid. I thought the plot and characters were well articulated but I think I expected a bigger twist although I suppose it was in the realm of possibility. I liked the now and then storylines but I think it would have been more effective if these moved back and forth in sections rather than being split into 2 large chunks to add to the intrigue. It was also LONG! I really wanted her to get to the conclusion and the length reduced my enjoyment of the book.
