Starts off strong, but more of a 3.5 stars than the full four. You can’t help but read this in his Salford accent, or at least I couldn’t. If you don’t know what JCC sounds like, look up a recording of him performing Twat or I Wanna Be Yours or look up his top tracks playlist chosen by the man himself on Spotify, and then try to read the book any other way. I swear it improves the whole experience, but sorry if your internal voice changes into someone else for a few days after. Irvine Welsh does the same thing to me.
Internal voice considerations aside, this starts off really funny but gets to be tiresome lists of Look At All These Cool People I Saw And Met And Worked With. Which might be what you’re looking with but this opens as a non-traditional unstructured autobiography and morphs into consciously cool lists of gigs he went to and people he played with. He also plays the “keep politics out of music” card which always turns me right off. His description of his drug use is both fascinating and really insightful; it skims glamourising and manages to both describe why he did the drugs he did, the sensations while also explicitly documenting the costs and hisstruggles with getting off them.
CW: copious drug use

I loved it, being from the region myself I pictured the background of his childhood stories almost perfectly. Also being a poet his descriptions of said locations is fantastic and I felt myself being drawn into the book.

Being a 90s kid a lot of his cultural references are kind of lost on me without looking them up but JCC is charming, funny and has led quite the life. I really enjoyed this read!
