Funny story about this one: my mother in law gave me her copy of this book. It’s been on my shelf for at least a year. I went to our local library book sale and picked up the US version without realizing they were the same book!

This book has a little bit of everything: cranky, but endearing main character, creative unraveling of her complex backstory (and how she understandably got to be cranky!), found family (literal and figurative), cute penguins, a conservationist angle (fans of Migrations will see some lighter parallels here) and even a wee bit of romance. I really enjoyed the dual POV between Veronica and Patrick, and perhaps especially after my last review, I appreciated that both were told in first person. There are two more books in this series and I will be adding those to my TBR!

Read this cover to cover in one day! A wonderful read, with some sweet as well as some heartbreaking moments!

It was a beautiful story with dual POVs as well as flashbacks to when Veronica was younger. This reminds me a little bit of A Christmas Carol, and it worked really well. I loved both Veronica and Patrick's character developments, and I thought it was cool to have Patrick and Terry's story mirror Giovanni and Veronica's.
