Did not feel involved in the story at any point.

This book was dark & hard to read. But it was ultimately worth the effort, I think.

Leer este libro fue un verdadero viaje lleno de magia. Siempre es bueno tirar de la mano a una historia cpde fantasía para salir un poco de la rutina.

I really wish there were conditional stars or half stars for ratings. In brief, this novel did not sit well with me. This is not due to the intense subject matter, which was well handled, but by the fact that the social commentary was addressed at the expense of world and character development. It is not for me.

Holy crap. This was not an easy book to read, but holy dang do I ever want to read more [a:Nnedi Okorafor|588356|Nnedi Okorafor|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1383620254p2/588356.jpg]. Oh, and in the acknowledgments she thanks Pat Rothfuss. ([a:Patrick Rothfuss|108424|Patrick Rothfuss|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1351307341p2/108424.jpg]? Really? Sometimes the worlds I read turn out to be smaller than I'd imagined. In a good way, I think?)

Oh, and of course Nnedi Okorafor has a story in [b:So Long Been Dreaming: Postcolonial Science Fiction and Fantasy|847409|So Long Been Dreaming Postcolonial Science Fiction and Fantasy|Nalo Hopkinson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1389449765s/847409.jpg|832924] and now I might have to go track down more authors from that anthology because I am a fool for not having thought of doing that sooner.

I give this four stars not because I don’t think everyone should read it—THEY SHOULD—but because...I didn’t like it as a leisure read? It’s an IMPORTANT read and I wish I could i give it five stars in that way...

Who Fears Death is a great story. The writing feels a little too simple and I don't know if that was an artistic choice since a theme in the book is communication. The story takes place in what is Sudan in, what I assume is, the future or an alternate present. With a mixture of old world magic and modern-day technology, the characters in this book go on a quest to save their world and people. This is a glimpse into a completely foreign world to me: Africa, religious traditions, shape shifting. But I enjoyed the quest if at times not the writing.

Mixed feelings.
