This one held up on rereading for me, even though it's one of the few where I remembered the solution partway through. This was one of my first Agatha Christie books (if not the first) so it holds a special place in my heart regardless, but I was glad to find it was just as enjoyable and twisty as I remembered. It has all the best parts of a Poirot mystery ā€” the psychology, the unexpected twists, the side romances ā€” and no Hastings! Unfortunately Christie's prejudices also rear their head here after being mercifully absent for a while, so we get to read about the simple Nubians and the sketchy, swarthy, hot-blooded Latins. Just be aware going in that you're going to get a strong taste of the times.

Enjoyable read !

Tight mystery !

VERY TIGHT MYSTERY !

SO MANY RED HERRINGS !!

Satisfying solution that explains most (if not all) things !

Will probably re-read this !

I had the idea of stopping my reading when Poirot said he figured it all out, in a hypothetical attempt to try and solve the case myself, but after reading on, boy oh boy i'm glad I didn't.

It's fun, but I had already watched the movie from Kenneth Branagh so I already knew all the plot points.

Maybe this is just a skill issue, but I had some problems with remembering the characters in the book. There are so many of them.

It was entertaining and surprisingly breezy for a book with so many murders. Agatha Christie is a classic for a reason. That being said, the writing is definitely distinctly of a time and place (including some racist undertones in the discussion of the Egyptians)and the plot complications feel contrived rather than natural.

This was a book club pick.
