I didn’t know anything about this book going in, but I had high expectations. As a gamer, I loved that aspect. It’s full of nostalgia for old games and simpler times of my childhood.

However, I feel like the book kind of wrapped up in the middle and from there until the end it felt really dragged out. I couldn’t sense where it was going and was left a little disappointed with where it did go.

The concept is clever and there such strong character development in the first half, but it feels the second half was almost rushed to be finished.

absolutely phenomenal book. I was entranced the entire way through. This book plays with time/chronology in a way that really keeps you hooked, always wondering how the story will get to the future that you know it eventually gets to. The characters are remarkably well written and so complex. The story is beautiful. I couldn’t put it down before, but especially after, the chapter called “The NPC.” That chapter is one of the most beautifully written chunks of literature I’ve ever read. I’m gonna have to go back and read this again, for sure. I recommend this to everyone.

It’s a fun book in being about video-games and the creative process but I do think the author was trying to do too much and seemed to use the book to virtue signal her opinion on every possible issue.

The book has suicide, car-crash, chronic pain, amputation, DV, shooting, death, LGBT violence

I found this book so frustrating, I just wanted sam and Sadie to talk, like actually talk, to each other!!! I can't believe such a strong creative partnership could be marred by so many misunderstandings! Also so brutal and violent in a couple of places, really stomach churning and upsetting. The more reflective parts saved it for me, especially the couple of lines about aging right at the end.

I cannot remember who or where recommended this to me but I was not expecting it to be so sad. Maybe it was just a bad time for me to read this but I just ... bleh. It wasn't even like... cathartic sad. It was just sad.

Definitely check out the content warnings before reading this one because some of them came out of left field. I'm usually a horror/thriller reader, but there were a few scenes that were so jarringly dropped into this story that I got uncomfortable.

I was nervous because this book is longer than anything I've read in awhile, but it has been recommended to me many times and I'm so happy I read it! I didn't want it to end. The author's vocabulary is superb. I learned so many delicious words reading this book. Some of the best writing about a disability I have ever read. I relished the passages about Sam's time with his mom and grandparents. By the end of the book, I found myself thinking about friends I haven't talked to awhile, and wanting to catch up with them. I hope this book encourages other readers to reach out to old friends, too.

Definite content warning about a professor/freshman student relationship that has nonconsensual BDSM aspects, and a separate content warning for gun violence.
