I never expected to love a book about video games this much. The book is long and at times hard to get through but the characters really make up for it. Everyone is fully fleshed out and there are points where I love them and point when I hate them (except Marx he’s perfect). Even when I don’t like what a character is doing or what they’re feeling I still understand where they are coming from and why they would think that way. I loved looking at the artistic process through the lens of video games

Spoiler
I am writing the body of this review before giving a star rating because I am yet to sort out my thoughts.
On the whole I really enjoyed reading this book and I enjoyed the writing style and the switching perspectives and timelines. I particularly loved the part of the book told in the second person from Marx's perspective whilst he was in a coma.
However, from about halfway through the book I found Sadie and then Sam quite unlikeable. Their justifications for huge fallings out were either based on easily resolved miscommunication (a trope which I can't bear) or on things which were ultimately just silly. They then seemed to make up (often after years of not talking) for again quite trivial reasons. I also found that there were sometimes small inconsistencies with the descriptions of events and whilst I am willing to write that off as an intentional decision to show that Sadie and Sam perceived things differently, I don't think it was well done.
I liked that Sadie's relationship with Dov felt realistic but I feel he was given too much of a redemption arc for a man who was essential a predator who abused her for years.
I think overall this is just a book that was overhyped for me personally, it was good but not brilliant.

I’m genuinely not sure why this has won so many awards. I was hooked pretty fast and enjoyed it for a while, but at about the 40% mark I grew bored and wanted it to actually go somewhere. I felt like it never did. It’s definitely just a book about watching these people over a span of several years, but not very plot-focused or engaging in my opinion. I stopped caring about the characters because they weren’t doing anything interesting 😅 I’d only recommend this if you like character-driven “day in the life” type stories.

The first half was a 3*, the second half a 5*, balancing out at 4*.
I didn't find the characters particularly likeable, but I was definitely invested in their success and shared in their heartache. I feel sorry for books that have this much hype, as I always find they can never live up to the expectation, but I'm glad I read this.

The character development of this book is insanely rich - you will absolutely feel like you know these people, they are your friends,
Spoiler you work at Unfair Games
with them - you know their families. You tear up at their struggles. It is just rich, it is insanely well-written and while it took me about 3/4s of the way to fall in love with this book it was like falling off a cliff all of the sudden. As a gamer myself this spoke to me... I often gamed to escape and the deeply-developed worlds that Sam and Sadie find themselves in pull you in from outside the book - right into the pages.
I loved this book, I loved Sam and Sadie and Marx and Ant and Simon and Dong Hyun and Anna Lee and their stories.

The world around them is so well-written its like this happened. This is real. These are real people outside of the book and enmeshed into the real world that all of us live in. You live a whole life with these people in 397 pages.

I adored this book and its unlike anything I have read before.

I picked this up due to the hype surrounding it and after someone had recommended this as a love letter to video games, which I found to be true. I enjoyed the portrayal of game development and design the most. Nevertheless, after the first few chapters the pacing really slowed down and the book focused heavily on the two main characters, Sam and Sadie, and how their 'platonic' relationship changed over time. They're both flawed in their own ways, however, I found both of them to be really dislikable and insufferable, thus, it was really hard to immerse myself into the story when more than half the time they were fighting and not resolving the issues they had with each other.

Spoiler"'Zweisamkeit' is the feeling of being alone even when you're with other people." Simon turned to look in his husband's eyes. "Before I met you, I felt this constantly. I felt it with my family, my friends, and every boyfriend I ever had. I felt it so often that I thought this was the nature of living. To be alive was to accept that you were fundamentally alone." Simon's eyes were moist. "I know I'm impossible, and I know you don't care about German words or marriage. All | can say is, I love you and thank you for marrying me anyway."

Ant raised his glass. "Zweisamkeit," he said.

This book is beautiful and amazing and wonderful. I’m writing my review at 3 am, crying onto the last page. It’s so good, everyone should read it. It’s about friendship and life and games and everything, really.
