"The Bite of Winter" ("Bite") starts off with a lonely girl down on her luck in the dead of winter. Homeless and hungry, she is attacked and left for dead ... until a mysterious man somehow saves her life and introduces her to a world, and a roommate, that she can't begin to imagine ...

Bite was awesome - Lauren Smith is just expert at doling out those high emotions and those high stakes with such perfection that you have tears in your eyes and a fire in your chest. It's a quick (too quick!) read that combines a smart, tough heroine with two vampires that have become broody and just a little miserable in their old age, and each person brings something to the table for the others.

The setting is wonderfully rich, and the characters feel alive and the steam in this novella really hits the mark (one word: ménage ).

All in all, it's a great first book that blasts open a new world of vampires and humans and love. I highly recommend it!

This wasn't quite what I was expecting, but I did end up liking the story quite a bit. Zoey, Ian, and Connor are all sympathetic characters, and I really liked the idea of Zoey being able to bring the centuries-old vampires back to "life" again by bringing a touch of humanity back into their lives. The three of them had some interesting chemistry going on, and watching them prepare for a Christmas together was fun.

And I love that two big, bad, jaded vampires have been adopted by three stray cats. Too adorable.

The one part that was a little questionable is how quickly Zoey went from homeless girl who can't and won't depend on or trust anyone and who has been attacked in an alley and left for dead to a girl who is letting two vampires (!) take care of her. Shouldn't she have been a little less accepting of the whole creatures of the night are actually real and I'm staying with two of them thing? Slightly more freaked out, perhaps? Part of it could be explained away by the whole they-have-glamour idea, but surely not all...?

Overall, though, this was an enjoyable story. I'll be watching to see what Ms. Smith is going to be doing with the rest of this series.

THE BITE OF WINTER is a quick read paranormal romance set during the Chirstmas holidays. Overall this was a good read but I was left unsatisfied in the end. Being a novella there is lots that isn't filled in that would have made the story more enjoyable. There is general background information given on Zoey, Ian, and Connor but I was still left wanting more. The writing is fluid and the story interesting but the quick and simple resolutions was disappointing. There simply wasn't room within the story to explore the relationship between Ian and Conner and then the dynamics of their conflict in relationship to Zoey. THE BITE OF WINTER would have been much more enjoyable as a full length story.

I do plan on reading the next installment in the LOVE BITES series. I just hope the next one will be a full length story that will allow for the more fulfilling read that I have experienced when reading other of Smith's stories.
