A cute, easy read into the dualities of living as an Indigenous person in a predominantly white society. It does feel very reflective of the time it was written in, almost idolizing the “generosity” of the white folks that Junior interacts with.

Considering the main plot points center around a high school basketball team, I can’t believe how spellbound I was by this novel. The exploration of family loyalty and the need to leave family behind is full of heart wrenching truth and humor, keeping the issues accessible. Excellent coming of age novel.

My biggest hiccup was the length/: too short. And while I liked how fast it read, it also felt like it left out huge important chunks or summarized them in a sentence. That said, this was great. I loved the cartoons and there were so many great lines! It shows life on the reservation for a large majority of native Americans in the States (so long as you realize geography and culture differs) and makes it accessible. It dove into identity and love and race.
